MOT Type 1 limestone sub-base
  • Graded 40mm down to dust, so it locks together when compacted
  • Limestone for most domestic jobs; granite where the spec asks for it
  • Loose off the tipper, or 1-tonne bulk bags if you collect
  • Full 20t loads are cheaper per tonne than the yard price

What Type 1 is for

Anywhere you need a hard, stable base that won’t sink or rut.

Driveways

The standard sub-base under block paving, tarmac, resin and gravel drives. Usually 150mm compacted for cars.

Patios & paths

Goes down under the sharp sand bedding layer so slabs stay level for years, not months.

Garden rooms & sheds

A compacted Type 1 pad under cabins, sheds and greenhouses, or under a concrete slab.

Yards, roads & hardstandings

Car parks, access roads, container pads and lorry yards — built up in compacted layers.

Farm tracks & gateways

Firming up muddy gateways, field entrances and tracks that get churned by vehicles.

Making up levels

Building up low spots and backfilling behind walls or around foundations where you need it to stay put.

How much do I need?

Rule of thumb: Type 1 compacts to about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre.

Measure the area in metres, decide the depth, then: length × width × depth × 2.1 = tonnes.

Example: a 5m × 4m drive at 150mm deep is 5 × 4 × 0.15 = 3m³. 3 × 2.1 = 6.3 tonnes — so order 7.

Typical depths

About 100mm under paths and patios, 150mm under a driveway for cars, and more on soft ground or where vans and lorries will run. If an engineer or the council has given you a spec, go by that.

Lay it in layers of roughly 75–100mm and compact each one with a wacker plate or roller. Don’t tip the lot in one go and run over it once — that’s how drives sink.

Based on about 2.1 t/m³ compacted. A guide, not a guarantee — order a touch over rather than run short.

Load sizes — from a trailer-load to a 30-tonne artic

Three ways to get it. Pick the one that fits the job.

Collect from our yard

Any amount, loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags (+£5 a bag). We load you with the machine at Whitworth Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 7PZ. Type 1 limestone is £42/t collected.

2–9 tonnes on our own lorries

Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Delivery is per trip: £65 Hastings & Bexhill, £85 Rye & Tenterden, £100 Eastbourne. Minimum delivery 2 tonnes. Tipped loose.

10, 15, 20 & 30 tonne bulk loads

32-tonne 8-wheel tipper (up to 20t) or 44-tonne artic (30t), anywhere in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Essex, Hertfordshire and up towards Cambridge. Instant online price around Hastings & Bexhill; everywhere else a firm delivered price within the hour in working hours.

Worth knowing: loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t), so a full 20 tonnes is often better value than 12 or 15 — ask us to price both. We need 48 hours’ notice for delivery. Pay online by card or PayPal, or by bank transfer; trade account customers can be invoiced monthly. Before you book, check the lorry sizes & site access — a tipper needs far more height to tip than it does to drive in.

Buying for the trade?

Type 1 is the bulk of what our trade customers buy. Groundworkers and landscapers doing drive after drive get repeat 20-tonne loads to site, a monthly invoice and one person to ring when the next job lands.

  • Landscapers, groundworkers, builders & civils
  • Monthly invoicing on a trade account
  • Repeat bulk loads to the same site
  • Firm delivered quote within the hour
  • Our own yard & crusher — family firm since 1966

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between MOT Type 1 and recycled Type 1?
MOT Type 1 is quarried crushed limestone (or granite), clean and consistent in colour and grading. Recycled Type 1 is crushed from concrete, brick and tile at our own yard. It does the same job under most drives, yards and hardstandings and is a lot cheaper (from £24.50/t delivered on a 20t load), but it varies more from load to load. If your spec says primary Type 1, buy primary.
How much Type 1 do I need for a driveway?
Multiply length × width × depth in metres, then multiply by 2.1. A 5m × 4m drive at 150mm deep comes to about 6.3 tonnes, so order 7. Use the calculator on this page for your own measurements.
Limestone or granite Type 1 — which do I need?
Limestone is the everyday choice for drives, patios and bases. Granite is harder and is often what engineers specify on roads and commercial jobs. If you have a specification, follow it; if not, limestone is usually fine.
Can I buy just one tonne of Type 1?
Yes, if you collect. You can collect any amount from our yard in St Leonards-on-Sea, loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags (£5 per bag). Our minimum delivery is 2 tonnes.
Why is a full 20-tonne load cheaper per tonne?
Loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge of £14 a tonne. The lorry costs much the same to run whether it carries 12 tonnes or 20, so a full 20 tonnes often works out better value — ask us to price both.
Is Type 1 permeable?
Not really. Type 1 has fines in it that pack down tight, so water drains slowly. For permeable paving and SuDS drives you want Type 3 open-graded sub-base instead.
