Open-graded stone sub-base
  • Type 3 has the fines left out, so water runs straight through it
  • Goes under permeable block paving, gravel and resin-bound drives
  • Granite Type 1 for heavily trafficked or specified jobs
  • Smaller amounts? Ring us — we’ll tell you straight what’s practical

What Type 3 and granite are for

When a normal Type 1 base won’t pass the spec or the planners.

Permeable block paving

The open-graded base under permeable blocks, so rain soaks away through the drive rather than onto the road.

SuDS front drives

In England, paving more than 5m² of a front garden with a surface that doesn’t drain usually needs planning permission. A permeable build-up avoids that.

Car parks & attenuation

Sub-base that doubles as storage for storm water on commercial car parks and new-build estates.

Under resin-bound & gravel

A free-draining base under resin-bound surfacing and gravel drives.

Roads & heavy traffic (granite)

Granite Type 1 is harder than limestone and is often specified for roads, yards and adoptable work.

Engineer-specified jobs

If a drawing calls for Type 3 or granite Type 1, we can supply full loads to site.

How much do I need?

Type 3 is about 1.9 t/m³ compacted; granite Type 1 about 2.2 t/m³.

Length × width × depth (in metres) × density = tonnes.

Example: a 6m × 5m permeable drive with a 250mm Type 3 layer is 6 × 5 × 0.25 = 7.5m³. At about 1.9 t/m³ that’s roughly 14.3 tonnes.

At that size, compare the price of a full 20 tonnes — under 20t on a tipper carries a part-load charge, and a little spare Type 3 is never wasted on a building job.

Depth

Permeable build-ups are usually deeper than a standard Type 1 base because the stone is holding water as well as carrying weight. Your paving supplier or engineer will give you the depth — the calculator does the rest.

Load sizes — from a trailer-load to a 30-tonne artic

Three ways to get it. Pick the one that fits the job.

Collect from our yard

Any amount, loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags (+£5 a bag). We load you with the machine at Whitworth Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 7PZ. Ring for yard prices on Type 3 and granite.

2–9 tonnes on our own lorries

Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Delivery is per trip: £65 Hastings & Bexhill, £85 Rye & Tenterden, £100 Eastbourne. Minimum delivery 2 tonnes. Tipped loose.

10, 15, 20 & 30 tonne bulk loads

32-tonne 8-wheel tipper (up to 20t) or 44-tonne artic (30t), anywhere in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Essex, Hertfordshire and up towards Cambridge. Instant online price around Hastings & Bexhill; everywhere else a firm delivered price within the hour in working hours.

Worth knowing: loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t), so a full 20 tonnes is often better value than 12 or 15 — ask us to price both. We need 48 hours’ notice for delivery. Pay online by card or PayPal, or by bank transfer; trade account customers can be invoiced monthly. Before you book, check the lorry sizes & site access — a tipper needs far more height to tip than it does to drive in.

Buying for the trade?

Type 3 and granite are mostly bought by groundworkers and civils contractors working to a drawing. Send us the spec, the site postcode and the phasing and we’ll price the loads and keep them coming.

  • Landscapers, groundworkers, builders & civils
  • Monthly invoicing on a trade account
  • Repeat bulk loads to the same site
  • Firm delivered quote within the hour
  • Our own yard & crusher — family firm since 1966

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 3?
Type 1 is graded from 40mm down to dust, so it packs tight and water drains through slowly. Type 3 is open graded (0/40) with most of the fines left out, so it leaves gaps for water to pass through and be stored. Use Type 3 under permeable paving and SuDS systems; use Type 1 everywhere else.
Do I need planning permission for a new front drive?
In England, if you pave more than 5 square metres of a front garden with a surface that doesn’t let water through, you normally need planning permission. A permeable surface on a Type 3 base, or a design that drains onto your own garden, usually does not. Check with your local council if you are unsure.
Why would I choose granite Type 1 over limestone?
Granite is harder and stands up better to heavy traffic, which is why it’s often specified on roads and commercial yards. For a domestic drive or patio, limestone Type 1 is normally fine and cheaper.
Can I mix Type 3 with Type 1?
No. The fines in Type 1 would fill the gaps in the Type 3 and stop it draining. Keep them separate and follow the build-up your paving system specifies.
Can you deliver less than 20 tonnes of Type 3?
Yes, 10 and 15 tonne loads are available, but loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t). Ring us on 01424 222288 for smaller amounts and we’ll tell you the most sensible option.
