What ballast is for

Anywhere you’re mixing your own concrete.

Shed & cabin bases

A concrete slab for sheds, workshops, garden rooms and greenhouses.

Garage floors & slabs

Floors and hardstanding slabs where you want something that won’t move.

Footings

Strip footings for garden walls and small extensions — to whatever mix building control asks for.

Fence posts

Setting concrete fence posts, gate posts and washing-line posts.

Concrete paths

Paths and pads laid in concrete rather than paving.

Kerbs & edgings

A stiff concrete bed and haunch behind kerbs and edgings.

How much do I need?

Rule of thumb: about 2 tonnes of ballast per cubic metre of finished concrete.

Work out the volume of concrete: length × width × depth (m). Multiply by about 2 for tonnes of ballast.

Example: a 3m × 2.4m shed base at 100mm is 0.72m³ of concrete, so roughly 1.5 tonnes of ballast. That’s under our 2-tonne delivery minimum — collect it, or have 2 tonnes delivered and use the spare for the posts.

The mix

For general bases and paths, a lot of people use about 1 part cement to 5 or 6 parts ballast. For footings and structural work, follow what building control or your engineer specifies.

Load sizes — from a trailer-load to a 30-tonne artic

Three ways to get it. Pick the one that fits the job.

Collect from our yard

Any amount, loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags (+£5 a bag). We load you with the machine at Whitworth Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 7PZ. All-in ballast is £42/t collected.

2–9 tonnes on our own lorries

Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Delivery is per trip: £65 Hastings & Bexhill, £85 Rye & Tenterden, £100 Eastbourne. Minimum delivery 2 tonnes. Tipped loose.

10, 15, 20 & 30 tonne bulk loads

32-tonne 8-wheel tipper (up to 20t) or 44-tonne artic (30t), anywhere in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Essex, Hertfordshire and up towards Cambridge. Instant online price around Hastings & Bexhill; everywhere else a firm delivered price within the hour in working hours.

Worth knowing: loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t), so a full 20 tonnes is often better value than 12 or 15 — ask us to price both. We need 48 hours’ notice for delivery. Pay online by card or PayPal, or by bank transfer; trade account customers can be invoiced monthly. Before you book, check the lorry sizes & site access — a tipper needs far more height to tip than it does to drive in.

Questions we get asked

What is all-in ballast?
All-in ballast is sharp sand and gravel mixed together in one material. Add cement and water and you have concrete, so you don’t need to buy sand and gravel separately.
How much ballast do I need for a shed base?
Allow about 2 tonnes of ballast for every cubic metre of concrete. A 3m × 2.4m base at 100mm thick is about 0.72m³, so roughly 1.5 tonnes.
What mix should I use?
For general bases, paths and posts, around 1 part cement to 5 or 6 parts ballast is common. For footings or anything structural, use the mix building control or your engineer specifies.
How much does ballast cost delivered?
It’s £42 a tonne plus a delivery charge per trip: £65 around Hastings and Bexhill, £85 to Rye and Tenterden, £100 to Eastbourne. So 4 tonnes to Hastings is £233 + VAT. Bulk loads further afield are priced on request, usually within the hour.
Can I collect ballast in bulk bags?
Yes. We fill 1-tonne bulk bags at the yard for £5 a bag, or load you loose. Our yard is on Whitworth Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 7PZ.
