Sharp sand in the yard
  • 0/4 grading — coarse enough to drain and hold its shape
  • Recycled option at a much lower price for bedding and fill
  • Loose off the lorry, or in 1-tonne bulk bags if you collect
  • Not the same as building sand — see below

What sharp sand is for

It’s gritty on purpose — it grips, drains and doesn’t squash out.

Bedding slabs

The bedding layer under patio slabs, either laid semi-dry or mixed with cement for a full mortar bed.

Block paving

The screeded laying course under block paving, and to brush into the joints once it’s down.

Floor screeds

Mixed with cement (commonly 3:1 or 4:1) for a floor screed over concrete or insulation.

Concrete

With gravel and cement for concrete — or buy ballast, which is sand and gravel already mixed.

Render

Blended with soft sand in many render mixes for extra strength.

Haunching & edgings

Mixed stiff with cement to haunch kerbs, edgings and channel blocks.

How much do I need?

Sharp sand weighs roughly 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre.

Length × width × depth (m) × 1.6 = tonnes.

Patio example: slabs on a 50mm bed over a 4m × 3m patio is 4 × 3 × 0.05 = 0.6m³, about 1 tonne. Under our 2-tonne delivery minimum — so collect it, or round up and use the spare for the joints and the next job.

Screed example: a 20m² floor at 75mm is 1.5m³, about 2.4 tonnes of sand before cement.

Natural or recycled?

Recycled sharp sand is screened from recycled material. It’s fine for bedding, backfill and under block paving, but colour and grading vary a bit from load to load. For a floor screed or anything structural, use natural 0/4.

Load sizes — from a trailer-load to a 30-tonne artic

Three ways to get it. Pick the one that fits the job.

Collect from our yard

Any amount, loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags (+£5 a bag). We load you with the machine at Whitworth Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 7PZ. Sharp sand 0/4 is £42/t collected, recycled sharp sand £25/t.

2–9 tonnes on our own lorries

Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Delivery is per trip: £65 Hastings & Bexhill, £85 Rye & Tenterden, £100 Eastbourne. Minimum delivery 2 tonnes. Tipped loose.

10, 15, 20 & 30 tonne bulk loads

32-tonne 8-wheel tipper (up to 20t) or 44-tonne artic (30t), anywhere in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Essex, Hertfordshire and up towards Cambridge. Instant online price around Hastings & Bexhill; everywhere else a firm delivered price within the hour in working hours.

Worth knowing: loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t), so a full 20 tonnes is often better value than 12 or 15 — ask us to price both. We need 48 hours’ notice for delivery. Pay online by card or PayPal, or by bank transfer; trade account customers can be invoiced monthly. Before you book, check the lorry sizes & site access — a tipper needs far more height to tip than it does to drive in.

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between sharp sand and building sand?
Sharp sand is coarse and gritty, so it holds its shape and drains — it’s used for bedding slabs and block paving, screeds and concrete. Building (soft) sand is finer and smoother, which makes a workable mortar for bricklaying and pointing. They are not interchangeable.
How much sharp sand do I need for a patio?
Multiply the area in square metres by the bed depth in metres, then by 1.6. A 12m² patio on a 50mm bed needs about 1 tonne. The calculator on this page will work it out for you.
Can I use recycled sharp sand for a screed?
We’d advise against it. Recycled sharp sand is ideal for bedding, backfill and under block paving, but it varies more than natural sand. For a floor screed use natural 0/4 sharp sand.
Can you deliver sharp sand in bulk bags?
Bulk bags are for collection from our yard — £5 per 1-tonne bag. Deliveries are tipped loose from the lorry, so make sure you have somewhere firm and clear to take it.
What is the smallest delivery you do?
Our minimum delivery is 2 tonnes, on our own lorries around Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Any smaller amount can be collected from the yard.
