10mm shingle
  • Single-size stone — water runs straight through it
  • 10mm for pipe bedding and paths, 20mm for drives and drainage
  • A working shingle, not a decorative chipping — ask to see it if colour matters
  • Full 20t loads are the best value per tonne

What gravel & shingle is for

Drainage first, looks second.

Soakaways & french drains

20mm or 40mm around perforated pipe and in soakaway pits so water can get away.

Pipe bedding

10mm shingle to bed and surround drainage pipes and ducts.

Gravel drives

A 40–50mm top layer over a compacted Type 1 base. 20mm tends to stay put better under tyres.

Paths & borders

10mm is kinder underfoot on paths and round the edges of the house.

Concrete

Mixed with sharp sand and cement where you’re batching your own coarse aggregate.

Drainage strips

Round the base of walls and under decking to keep water and weeds down.

How much do I need?

Loose gravel weighs about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.

Length × width × depth (m) × 1.5 = tonnes.

Path example: a 10m × 1m path at 50mm deep is 0.5m³, about 0.75 tonnes — a collection job.

Soakaway example: a 1.5m × 1.5m pit, 1.5m deep, is about 3.4m³ — roughly 5 tonnes of 20mm or 40mm, less whatever the pipe or crates take up.

Drives

Gravel on a drive only works on a proper base. Put 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 down first, then 40–50mm of gravel on top. Any deeper and cars sink in it.

2–9 tonnes on our own lorries

Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle, Rye, Tenterden and Eastbourne. Delivery is per trip: £65 Hastings & Bexhill, £85 Rye & Tenterden, £100 Eastbourne. Minimum delivery 2 tonnes. Tipped loose.

10, 15, 20 & 30 tonne bulk loads

32-tonne 8-wheel tipper (up to 20t) or 44-tonne artic (30t), anywhere in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Essex, Hertfordshire and up towards Cambridge. Instant online price around Hastings & Bexhill; everywhere else a firm delivered price within the hour in working hours.

Worth knowing: loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge (£14/t), so a full 20 tonnes is often better value than 12 or 15 — ask us to price both. We need 48 hours’ notice for delivery. Pay online by card or PayPal, or by bank transfer; trade account customers can be invoiced monthly. Before you book, check the lorry sizes & site access — a tipper needs far more height to tip than it does to drive in.

Buying for the trade?

Drainage contractors, groundworkers and landscapers take shingle by the 20-tonne load. Trade accounts get monthly invoicing and repeat loads to the same site without re-quoting every time.

Questions we get asked

What size gravel is best for a driveway?
For drives, 20mm (10–20mm) tends to stay put better and doesn’t get carried off in tyre treads as much. 10mm is more comfortable to walk on and suits paths. Either way, lay it about 40–50mm deep over a compacted Type 1 base.
What gravel do I use for a soakaway?
A clean single-size stone, usually 20mm or 40mm, so there’s plenty of space between the stones for water. Ask us for 40mm prices — it’s price on request.
Is 4–10mm the same as pea shingle?
It’s the size most people mean by pea shingle — small rounded stone around 10mm. It’s used for pipe bedding, paths and around drainage.
Is your shingle decorative?
It’s a working shingle that looks tidy, but it isn’t a specialist decorative chipping. If colour matters, come and look at it in the yard or ask us to send a photo before you order.
Why is 20 tonnes cheaper per tonne than 10?
Loads under 20 tonnes on a tipper carry a part-load charge of £14 a tonne. The lorry costs roughly the same to run either way, so a full 20 tonnes is often better value.
